Weddings
It may be strange to see that a divorce lawyer can officiate a wedding. I don't actually enjoy getting people divorced. I really enjoy mediating and coaching with couples on how to stay married. I also discovered the county can designate and authorize an individual to perform weddings. I registered! I love to help people become official.
Legal Benefits
You may have been living with someone for sometime. You may have purchased a home together. You may have purchased cars or other assets together. You may have had children together. Unfortunately, if you were not married when those things were purchased, or children were born, you may have lost, or failed to secure, many automatic benefits of a married couple. It doesn't mean you still can't be protected. Getting married is one way to provide protection for the ventures and people that matter most in your relationship.
Preparing for Death
This may be a hard topic. Just like asset and the protection of your children, if you or your partner dies, and there is no legal marriage between you, you may have to fight inheritance law and other family members for a right to the assets that you helped acquire.
If your partner is in the hospital, or on hospice, there may be legal and serious medical decisions that may need to be made. Being married helps insure that your partner, or spouse, can be there to help make sure your best interests are a priority.
Ratify the Contract
Marriage is a binding agreement between two people, with many terms—spoken and unspoken—governing the relationship. Choosing to acknowledge those terms is a powerful affirmation of your commitment and your willingness to be bound to one another. Living together works well for roommates, but for two people who truly intend to spend their lives together in a committed, enduring way, marriage offers a meaningful way to honor and formalize that bond. It’s not an obligation—but as a lawyer, I can’t help loving it when people put their commitments in writing. Haha!
